Etichetta — How to Use

What Etichetta does

Etichetta (Italian for label or tag) detects overlapping annotation elements — independent tags, text notes, and dimensions — across all plan views in your project, and automatically repositions conflicting elements using a priority-aware grid-snap algorithm.

Two commands work together:

Command Purpose
Distractful Views Scan all plan views and see exactly how many overlapping annotations each view contains
Etiquetta Assortment Arrange the annotations in the active view using your priority order — elements you mark as locked stay put, others move to the nearest free grid slot

Requirements

  • Autodesk Revit 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026, or 2027
  • An open project with plan views containing annotation elements

Command 1 — Distractful Views

  1. Open any Revit project.
  2. Go to the Avant Leap tab → Etichetta panel → click Distractful Views.
  3. Click Scan All Views. Etichetta scans every plan view in the model.
  4. Views with annotation overlaps appear in the list with a conflict count.
  5. Check the Fix box next to any view you want to address with Etiquetta Assortment.
  6. Click Close — your selections are saved automatically.

Tip: Views with the highest conflict count are your worst offenders. Start there.

Command 2 — Etiquetta Assortment

  1. Activate the plan view you want to arrange (double-click it in the Project Browser).
  2. Go to the Avant Leap tab → Etichetta panel → click Etiquetta Assortment.
  3. The window shows:
    • Active view — the currently open plan view
    • Clash summary — how many elements are involved in overlaps
    • Priority list — all annotation types found in the view, in order
  4. Set your priority order:
    • Top row = highest priority (these stay in place)
    • Use ↑ and ↓ to reorder types
    • Check Lock to prevent a type from moving at all
  5. Adjust Grid cell (ft) if needed. Smaller value = finer placement.
  6. Click Arrange View.

Etichetta moves only the elements that are part of at least one overlap. Non-conflicting annotations are never touched.

Undo: Press Ctrl+Z once to undo all moves from the last arrangement.

Saved order: Your priority order and lock state are saved per project. The next time you open Etiquetta Assortment on the same project, your settings are restored automatically.

Tips

  • Lock room tags and area tags first — these are typically placed precisely and should never move.
  • Leave generic tags (IndependentTag) unlocked — these are the most likely to overlap and benefit most from arrangement.
  • Start with a larger grid cell (e.g. 0.1 ft) to get elements roughly separated, then refine with a smaller value.
  • Dimensions are shown in the conflict report but are not moved — Revit's Dimension API does not support repositioning in most configurations.
  • If a view has many overlaps but the arrangement result still looks cluttered, check the crop region — very dense annotation areas may need manual fine-tuning after arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will Etichetta move my carefully placed room tags? A: Not if you lock them. Check the Lock box for Room Tags in the priority list before clicking Arrange.

Q: The arrangement doesn't look perfect — can I run it again? A: Yes. Undo (Ctrl+Z), adjust the grid cell size or priority order, then click Arrange again.

Q: Why are dimensions not moved? A: Revit's Dimension API does not expose a writable text position in most configurations. Dimensions appear in the conflict count so you can see where they overlap with other elements, but they are skipped during arrangement.

Q: Is there a way to see what changed? A: The status bar at the bottom of the Etiquetta Assortment window shows how many elements were repositioned after each Arrange operation.
